So what's this all about?
I had thought every single industry had been streamlined, rationalised, re-engineered and Total Quality Managed within an inch of its existence. Apparently not. The world of Grant Making is an interesting one: an industry which has burgeoned, with the growth of banking and energy trusts, and gaming trusts. Many Councils also run substantial grant making programmes, and more and more corporate entities are looking to be seen to be doing good through giving programmes.
I came out of Otago University with an Honours degree in Marketing and a side of Accounting and Finance. I have worked in the corporate sector for over fifteen years in banking and the oil industry, had some time out for children, and then part time workforce re-entry into a post earthquake Not for Profit, followed by a stint at a grant maker. I have no policy background, no political agenda... I am just a bit nosy and interested in how, and why, resources get allocated.
What I've come to believe is that the $600,000,000 community grant making industry needs some sunlight. There is no one monitoring the power that these organisations have. These entities pretty much allocate financial resources to many of New Zealand's 125,000 charities, societies and school without consequence. Organisations which serve our communities pay people to chase these grants, and those people who make those grants pay other people to review, allocate and hold accountable their portion of the grants. Where money comes from, where it goes and how it gets there.
So I dive into data where I can find it, and try to make a difference.
